Retaining and erosion control
Double-twisted hexagonal mesh baskets that are laced together on site and filled with graded stone. The finished structure is permeable, flexible enough to settle without cracking, and heavy enough to act as a retaining or erosion-control mass. Woven and welded gabions are produced to order in Anping, China and flat-packed for container shipment.

A gabion box is roughly cubic, typically 1 m high, and is used to build walls and mass structures. A Reno mattress is much flatter, usually 0.3 m high, and is laid across a slope for surface protection and erosion control.
If one wire in a double-twisted mesh is cut, the twist holds and the panel does not unravel. Welded mesh is stiffer and holds a flatter face, so it suits architectural walls, but the twisted mesh is more tolerant of movement and damage in hydraulic works.
Galvanized wire is adequate for most inland and intermittently wet situations. Galfan or galvanized-plus-PVC should be considered where the structure is permanently immersed, in brackish or saline water, or where the design life is long and access for maintenance is difficult.
As a working rule, the stone should be about 1.5 to 2 times the mesh aperture, so that stones cannot fall out but the void ratio stays high. Stone is normally sourced locally to the site.
Boxes are supplied flat, folded and bundled, then opened and laced together on site. Internal diaphragms are fitted at the spacing required to keep the box shape while it is being filled.
